How to copy files to 'SD Card' ?
« on: December 12, 2011, 01:33:06 PM »
Can anyone tell me where the desktop folder is that holds files on the virtual SD Card/storage card?

I wish to put data files (music/pictures, text files, etc) onto the virtual sdcard.

I read on this forum that dropbox is used. There is no information on how that works.

This software is excellently fast but if it cannot give access to the virtual sdcard then its very limited in use to developers like me who store program data on the storage card. :(

Dropbox: Is kind of like a multi-platform shared folder

How to get Dropbox on Youwave:
- Create a account on http://www.dropbox.com
- Install the Dropbox for PC
- Google for: Dropbox APK (Download It)
- Place APK file in your Dropbox folder
- Surf to www.dropbox.com from within Youwave
- Login & Download the Dropbox APK file

After installation any file present in your Dropbox folder, will be available for Youwave

If you have a real Android phone, you can backup your apps with Astro File Manager and upload to Dropbox via phone...
Instead of Googling for it... Backup Location: SDCARD\backups\apps

The same File Manager can be used to acces the YouWave SD card, you can Google for: Astro Manager APK
And pass it via Dropbox

Another less favoured alternative is Winmount:
A few cons with this program:
- It can't access the VDI (Virtual Disk) files while running Youwave
- costs $49 (There is a free version, don't know how free)

There are 2 VDI files:
- youwave_vm01.vdi (Data Disc)
- youwave_vm01_golden.vdi (Formatted Disc)
(Purpose of 2nd disc: Is to manually reset Youwave when needed, by copying and renaming it to "youwave_vm01.vdi")

VDI files are stored here:
%USERPROFILE%\.Virtualbox\HardDisks

(Paste directory path in adress bar)

Thank you Recon

Most useful info!

If I have got this right, to send files from your computer to your virtual Android device SDCARD (your computer) you have to send them across the world on the internet and then they are sent back to the same hard drive they started on?

I think it is time the YouWave people worked out a way to do properly because his dropbox method is bonkers insane. :(

It makes the YouWave program completely unusable for me (as a developer of Android Apps).

We do have some developer users. But we do not view Android Emulator as a competing product with YouWave. Our focus is on the ease of use aspects. Sometimes developers need non-tech people to test/demo their apps. It is not easy to go through the Emulator's process of installation for non-tech people. Because of this, yes, we will provide a debugging capability in YouWave. Integrating with an IDE is a second step.

You are right, we do notice that some new developers try YouWave when they are not familiar because it is easy and fast to run and later switch to SDK emulator.

I have a workable solution

To access the SDCARD in YouWave, need to use Linux command.
Steps as follow:

1. Register DropBox
2. Copy the files into DropBox (local PC hard disk)
3. in YouWave, use internal browser to login to DropBox Accound
4. download the file into YouWave
5. Open Dev Tool apps -> Terminal Server
6. In the Linux windows, type su - (to get super user rights)
7. cd / (go down to the root)
8. the download files is in /mnt/sdcard/download/
9. suppose the download files is for LIME, so the destination is /mnt/sdcard/limehd
10. copy the file from download to destination by
    cp /mnt/sdcard/download/canton.txt /mnt/sdcard/limehd/canton.lime
11. type 'exit' and press "go back"
the file is right in hand for installation

Thanks for sharing that educational information, but there are better ways to acces the SD CARD

My personal favorite is: Astro FileManager...
- Just Google Astro Manager APK
- Pass the APK via dropbox
- Install the Astro Manager APK

Now you got visual acces to the SD CARD, no need for command typing.

There are also filemanagers in AndAppStore, but I don't like them

easy way to run apk in pc is copy the apk to
C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\youwave\android apps
in View -> Redraw Icons
if still cannot see the new apk
in File -> Path to Apps, set to above location
then redraw icons
then double click the icons to run

Dear reconx86
I need to copy files from SD Card not to SD Card

I installed Astro Manager but directly as apk into youwave, and I can see the files I need at: /mnt/sdcard/download/
But how can I take a copy of it to my pc?

=================================
How to copy from Youwave to PC
=================================
- Select your file in Astro File Manager
- Click and Hold the file, until menu pops up
- Send > Dropbox
- Select upload directory
- Click upload

PS: Works similarly in Open Manager & ES File Explorer
============================================
Within Dropbox
============================================

- Open Dropbox
- (if wanted) Select upload directory
- Click "Menu"
- Choose "Photos or videos" or "Other files"
- Select the file you want to upload (from within YouWave)
- Press "Upload"

For any developpers that still want to test there apps within youwave, a better workaround is:
Rendering the APK file in %USERPROFILE%\youwave\android apps

Then in youwave go to:
View > Redraw Icons

Now it should appear in the side panel

First, I'd like to add my sentiments that YouWave should simply expose the sdcard folder in Windows (maybe even the mnt folder, but at least the sdcard folder). Just as YouWave allows the user to select the location of the apps via File>Path To Apps, it should allow the user to select the location of the sdcard (or mnt folder) via File>Path To SDcard (or File>Path To mnt).

Second, a huge thanks to reconx86! I never would have figured that out on my own and the Astro/Dropbox technique works perfectly. Regards, Joe

YouWave uses a virtual SD-card called youwave_vm01.vdi

You can find the SD-card here:
- Press Windows + R
- Type: %USERPROFILE%\.Virtualbox\HardDisks

It has to be mounted to be read, therefor only YouWave and applications like WinMount & PowerISO are able to open it.
